Hoek Van Holland

My Journey with the Ocean & Photography

Since a very young age, I have been a creative spirit, fascinated by the ocean and surfing, despite being born and raised in a tiny landlocked village in the Netherlands. Even then, I knew I wanted to travel and follow my passion for the ocean.

Life afforded me an exceptional opportunity, guiding me towards a different path where I embraced a creative career in the fashion industry. This led me to work on an international scale with acclaimed brands such as Diesel, Nike, and Louis Vuitton.

This endeavour allowed me to travel the “7 seas” and discover the world.

Seeking a closer bond with the ocean, I eventually relocated to the Northern Beaches in Sydney, Australia, which is now my home.

My journey with photography began with a drone capturing aerial views over beaches and North Head. However, later on, when the pandemic struck, I had to return to the Netherlands for a family matter. During my extended stay there, I furthered my education in photography and the arts.

In the Netherlands, I found solace in creative macro photography, predominantly using vintage or manual lenses. Upon returning to Sydney, I promptly resumed my focus on ocean and surf photography, where my true passion lies. I love shooting in the water, as it offers me more creative freedom and a profound connection with the ocean.

In my photography, I seek out exceptional light, moody and dramatic atmospheres, minimalism or maximalism, close-ups versus pulled-back shots, capturing strong, powerful, or dancing postures. You will often find my work in deep and rich colors, occasionally using black and white or softer pastel tones.

My recent photography work concentrates on the ocean and surf, where I occasionally incorporate vintage lenses such as Meyer Optik Gorlitz, Zenitar, and Takumar.
